Veterans Day is celebrated across the U.S. each year on November 11th. It is a time to honor and thank those who have served in the military for their sacrifices and dedication, and to show our appreciation. Whether attending an event virtually or in person, volunteering, donating to nonprofits that support veterans, or simply listening to the stories and experiences of those who have served, your efforts can help veterans feel valued.
At Kobie, we thank all of our teammates who have served and those who continue to protect and defend our nation. We encourage curiosity as a value, and appreciate those who are willing to share personal stories to help inspire others! Here is a story from Joe Doran, VP of Business Development at Kobie.
Tell us about a time you, a family member or friend felt included or not included as part of a community.
One of the most powerful and impactful periods of my life was when I served in the US Air Force. The US military and extended military community is a unique family that created for me and my family an opportunity to see some of the world and to participate in something that was so much bigger than us. This community is steeped in tradition and history with so many who have sacrificed profoundly. It’s a community that operates on a scale and with an impact that is humbling and the positive impact on my life and career can not be understated.
How did this experience change your perception or understanding?
I am forever changed as a result of my four years in the Air Force. Stationed in Boston, my perception of Patriots fans certainly changed for the worse. My perception of the world changed for the better. In my role, I worked with NATO allies and other governments that were dedicated to coordinating assets in various theaters of operation. To lose the jargon – we ensured that our fighters received fuel at the right time and the right place.
What I learned is that 1) British fighter pilots get a higher per diem for cocktails than US fighter pilots (because the Queen does not want them to be thirsty) and 2) there is a purity of heart for almost everyone who joins the military in service of their country. We’re really not that different.
In what ways can others be inspired by this story?
We live in a time in our nation where we are united around our respect and appreciation for our military women and men. When you see someone in uniform, don’t be afraid to thank them for their service and remember that in a time where we feel so divided and at odds with one another, their service represents what we have in common- a desire for a more peaceful world.
