What CMOs and loyalty leaders should know about the research behind the most academic loyalty study in the field.

Every year, brands make significant investments in loyalty strategy based on what they assume their customers want. The 2026 Heart of Loyalty Study exists to close that gap —with evidence.

Before you explore the findings, it’s worth understanding how we got there. The methodology behind this research is the reason you can trust what it tells you.

A Pracademic Lens: Where Behavioral Science Meets Business Reality

Kobie approaches loyalty research through what we call a pracademic lens — a disciplined integration of established academic theory and real-world practitioner experience. This is a commitment to producing findings that hold up to scrutiny and translate into action.

At the foundation is Kobie’s proprietary Emotional Loyalty Scoring (ELS®) framework, developed over years of consumer psychology research to measure the emotional drivers of long-term loyalty — the ones that exist beneath transactional behavior.

Layered on top of that are validated external models chosen specifically for each research question:

  • The privacy calculus effect — to understand the mental calculus consumers perform before sharing zero-party data.
  • Parasuraman’s Technology Readiness Index — to contextualize where consumers and brands actually stand on AI adoption.
  • Values congruency theory — to examine how personal and brand values intersect to drive advocacy and community engagement.
  • Rasch modeling and community engagement frameworks (Baldus et al., Sweeney et al.) — to segment loyalty behaviors with statistical precision.

These frameworks are embedded into the analysis to explain why behaviors occur.

Global Reach, Consistent Rigor

To ensure the findings reflect how loyalty actually works across markets, Kobie partnered with Prodege, a leading global research panel provider, to field the study across six countries spanning North America and Europe: the U.S., U.K., Canada, France, Germany, and Spain.

The result: thousands of consumer responses collected with consistent sampling standards — rigorous enough to surface global patterns, granular enough to reveal meaningful cultural differences. The research confirms something important: consumer psychology is largely universal, but its expression is culturally conditioned. How strongly a consumer responds to recognition in Germany versus Spain is not the same story, and the research treats those differences as signal.

A Foundational Shift: Practitioners Are Now Part of the Study

The 2026 study marks an evolution in the Heart of Loyalty program. For the first time, loyalty practitioners — the people responsible for designing, executing, and measuring loyalty strategies — are incorporated directly into the research alongside consumers.

This dual perspective is what makes this year’s findings uniquely valuable. Consumer data tells you what customers experience. Practitioner data tells you what brands believe they’re delivering. Mapping those two views against each other exposes the gaps that matter most — the places where confidence becomes a blind spot.

Those gaps are real, and in some cases, they’re striking.

Human Oversight at Every Stage

Research of this kind requires more than a sound methodology. It requires judgment. Oversight for the 2026 Heart of Loyalty is led by Dr. JR Slubowski, head of the Kobie Research Center of Excellence, who brings both scholarly rigor and practical loyalty expertise to every stage of interpretation. That human authority layer is what separates responsible insight from data in search of a conclusion.

What the Research Uncovers

The methodology is designed to answer the questions loyalty leaders are actually asking in 2026:

  • What actually motivates customers to share data — and what are brands overestimating?
  • Where are consumers genuinely ready for AI, and where are brands holding back?
  • Why is recognition — not rewards — the missing link in modern loyalty?
  • How do values alignment and community engagement shape long-term advocacy?
  • How does culture shape loyalty perception across markets?

The answers are specific, statistically grounded, and built for application.
