From Chat to Checkout: How AI is Changing the Game…AGAIN!

Recently, OpenAI released a new feature called Instant Checkout. With Instant Checkout, OpenAI allows users to buy products directly within ChatGPT, which is a subtle but very profound turning point for e-commerce and loyalty.

For a couple years now ChatGPT and AI tools like it have been making massive strides improving what people do across every industry. It’s no surprise that once again there is a new innovation (that we kind of expected) from the leader in AI tools. Recently, OpenAI released a new feature called Instant Checkout. With Instant Checkout, OpenAI allows users to buy products directly within ChatGPT, which is a subtle but very profound turning point for e-commerce and loyalty.

What is Instant Checkout and why does it matter to me?

The feature is still relatively new and has some limitations but as we’ve seen with most of the features and tools that OpenAI releases, this will likely grow into something much larger.

ā€œWhen someone asks a shopping questionā€”ā€œbest running shoes under $100ā€ or ā€œgifts for a ceramics loverā€ — ChatGPT shows the most relevant products from across the web. Product results are organic and unsponsored, ranked purely on relevance to the user.

If a product supports Instant Checkout, users can tap ā€œBuy,ā€ confirm their order, shipping, and payment details, and complete the purchase without ever leaving the chat.ā€

Simply put, Instant Checkout allows users to browse and purchase items without leaving ChatGPT.

At the moment, Ā Instant Checkout is integrated with Etsy merchants in the U.S. and they expect to expand to platforms like Shopify and others in the near future. Users can complete a purchase in just a few clicks, using stored payment methods such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, or credit cards all within the chat interface.

The Agentic Commerce Protocol, is open source. That’s a fancy way of saying anyone can integrate with it and likely overtime more retailers could allow direct AI powered purchases in ChatGPT and other tools like it.

For consumers, this is amazing. It’s a frictionless, convenient way to shop using an interface that they likely already use everyday. For brands, it’s a new retail channel to sell even more, but one where they no longer fully control the storefront, the user data, or even the customer relationship (that’s why this matters to brands).

The new type of commerce

For a long time now, online retail have followed this flow: Search online, click, browse the digital storefront, compare, buy. And loyalty has been built into that flow, rewarding people for repeat purchases, activities, capturing Zero Party Data, and tracking activity across the site.

Instant Checkout changes that. Now the flow becomes Search → Buy. ChatGPT will not only find options based on what you’re looking for, it can complete the transaction. This means less exposure to digital storefronts, less data capture, and less opportunity for loyalty engagement, unless brands begin to rethink how loyalty operates in this new AI first ecosystem.

Challenging Loyalty: Saving the direct relationship

You may be asking: ā€œWhat do I do about this?ā€ The ultimate consulting answer: ā€œIt depends.ā€

Right now, there are a couple of challenges to overcome:

  1. Data gaps
Purchases made through AI Chats can make the purchase journey a bit fuzzy. We won’t know who the customer is every time, what led to their purchase, and how that purchase fits into their loyalty history or journey.
  2. Less engagement
If purchases are made directly in a chat, it means less browsing on merchant websites, less opportunity to interact with pop-ups or in-app messages, which means lower engagement.
  3. Points & rewards
If loyalty points or discounts can’t be applied within the AI Chat interface, users may feel penalized for using features like Instant Checkout – and they may not blame ChatGPT for that, passing the blame to the brand.
  4. Loyalty to the platform
ChatGPT is the most used AI chat interface on the planet. If consumers begin trusting it for purchase recommendations and making purchases, loyalty strategies will need to shift to consider loyalty to the consumer’s preferred AI tool.

Building Loyalty in the AI era

Thinking about the future is great, and taking action today is even better. How can we take these changes in the market and turn them into an opportunity for brands to build loyalty and achieve greater sales?

Innovative brands can use Instant Checkout to their advantage and as a tool for evolution in the future. Here are some ways Kobie is working to make this an opportunity for brands:

Integrating Loyalty into AI protocols
As Kobie builds it’s leading Loyalty AI tools and capabilities, we explore ways to integrate Loyalty APIs in the Agentic Commerce Protocols created by ChatGPT so that members can be recognized when making purchases in their chats, they can earn points, brands can track points, and create personalized offers during the AI purchase process.

Enabling in-chat redemptions & rewards
If you can make a purchase through an AI chat, why not make a redemption? The basic principles are the same. We’re working on making that possible so consumers can redeem their points and pay lower prices at checkout, creating greater loyalty for members in this new channel.

A real shift to experiences
For years, the industry has spoken about shifting from transactional to experiential loyalty. Tools like Instant Checkout will make interacting with a brand even more transactional than before and shorten the journey. To combat this, Kobie has invested significantly in creating experiential loyalty strategies and programs that showcase the value of human to human interaction.

Invest in AI visibility
Brands may need to treat ChatGPT optimization the way they treated SEO in the 2000s, ensuring their products, loyalty perks, and messaging are properly represented in AI generated shopping results.

The big picture

Features like Instant Checkout won’t kill loyalty, they’ll only change it (again). A good loyalty partner leans into those changes and guides you through them.

If ChatGPT becomes the shopping assistant for consumers (which is likely) then brands have to adapt and adopt early. By embedding your loyalty systems and strategies into AI shopping experiences, brands can maintain the connection that matters most: the one between the customer and the brand identity.

The bottom line is, Instant Checkout is a transaction hub. Loyalty is elevated above those transactions. Brands who evolve their loyalty strategy to work with transaction hubs like ChatGPT will lead their competition in the age of AI. Those who don’t may find their customers becoming loyalty to an AI and not their brand.
